The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has suspended Zest Air operations due to safety reasons. The decision was made by a group of inspectors who monitored the airline in the end of July.

The inspectors said that they have found several safety violations and recommended the immediate suspension of the operations of the airline.

In a letter to Zest Air owner Alfredo Yao, CAAP Deputy Director General John Andrews said that they are alarmed by the airline's series of deviations and infractions of the rules under the Philippine Civil Aviation Regulations.

Some of Zest Air's violations include:

  • Zest Air's lack of qualified accountable manager; 
  • Failure of the flight crew to check aircraft logs, flight manifest and weather;
  • Failure to present the airman license to the CAAP during ramp inspection;
  • Refueling with passengers on board last August 14; and
  • Excessive flight duty time.

Zest Air flies to 14 destinations from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport as well as from the Mactan - Cebu International Airport and Kalibo International Airport.

Malaysia - based AirAsia Berhad owns 49% of the voting rights and 85% of the economic interest of Zest Air. Zest Air owner Alfredo Yao owns 15% of AirAsia.
